What We Do

The Battle of Shallow Ford Chapter, NSDAR, engages in a wide assortment of activities across the three major areas of DAR work to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and secure America’s future through better education for children. What is your passion?

Promoting Patriotism

  • Observe Veterans Day and participate in Veterans Day Events
  • Participate in naturalization and U.S. flag retirement ceremonies
  • Participate in the Anniversary of the Battle of Shallow Ford
  • Provide blankets, toiletries, reading material, and other needed items for veterans
  • Participate in the Lewisville Christmas Parade
  • Set up patriotic displays at local schools, libraries, and events

A Memorial Day display was created for the Lewisville Library.

Chapter members make Valentine cards for veterans and present them in a goodie bag with candies.

Historic Preservation

  • Mark graves of significant local American Revolutionary War Patriots
  • Support the National Society for the preservation of NSDAR buildings
  • Participate in local historic programs, tours, and events
  • Coordinate an annual educational event between our chapter, Historic Bethabara Park, and the Winston-Salem Downtown Arts District Association, linking the arts traditions of Winston-Salem to its origins with Moravian craftsmen and artisans
  • Help in the effort to continue the focus of preservation of the 1788 Gemeinhaus and the 1782 Potter’s House at Historic Bethabara Park

Members of the Battle of Shallow Ford Chapter, NSDAR, along with a historic interpreter, meet in the Bethabara Gemeinhaus after the installation of new members into the chapter.

The chapter aids in the ongoing preservation of the Bethabara Potter’s House along with the Master Potter.

The chapter marked the grave of Patriot Lieutenant John Shamel/Schemel.

Education

  • Present Constitution Week programs in elementary schools
  • Participate in Bells Across America on September 17 to honor the signing of the U. S. Constitution
  • Sponsor American History Essay Contests for fifth to eighth grade students
  • Sponsor awards for Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadets in high schools
  • Sponsor the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for high school seniors
  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Participate in the American History Book Club for chapter members

The Battle of Shallow Ford Chapter, NSDAR, presents awards to ROTC cadets.

Students created a banner of appreciation to the chapter for teaching lessons on the Constitution during Constitution Week.
